1 - What fuel isThe Bio-Burner™ certified for? TOP
The BB-100 has passed requirements for UL/CSA, CSA B415, EPA Phase 2 as a wood pellet and full gas burner. The BB-500 is built to the same standards as the BB-100. |
2 - What fuel can be burned in The Bio-Burner™? TOP
The BB-100 is certified for wood pellets but some of the other types of biomass you can burn are:
- Woody Biomass (dust, pellets, chips, etc.)
- Crops & Crop Stover (corn & stalks, Soybeans, other seeds & grains, grasses, tobacco, etc.)
- Pellets (wood, grass, etc.)
- Paper (junk mail, newspaper, cardboard, etc.)
- Gas Backup (Propane or Natural Gas)
- And much more
|
3 - What fuels are approved for use in The Bio-Burner™? TOP
The Bio-Burner™ is capable of burning most solid biomass (in the correct size and form- See Chart), but not all fuels are approved under The Bio-Burner warranty.
Tested and approved fuels include: wood chips, sawdust, wood pellets & corn
*EPA Testing done with wood pellets |
4 - What qualifies a fuel as "good"? TOP
There are 3 areas for grading fuel used by The Bio-Burner™: ash content, moisture content, BTU value. “Good” fuel will have low ash content, ideal moisture content (fuel specific) and a high BTU value. |
5 - What is a BTU? TOP
A BTU is defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 pound (0.454 kg) of liquid water by 1 °F (0.556 °C) at a constant pressure of one atmosphere.Several different definitions of the BTU exist which are based on different water temperatures and therefore vary by up to 0.5%: A BTU can be approximated as the heat produced by burning a single wooden match or as the amount of energy it would take to lift a one-pound weight to a height of 778 feet (237 m).

6 - Where do I get fuel? TOP
Use locally available biomass – woodchips/sawdust from sawmills, corn and pellets are readily available in most regions. Check your area to see what is most available for the cheapest price.*Note fuel size limitations: B10 chip size for BB-100 & B50 chip size for BB-500. |
What do you mean by B10, B25, B50, G30 or G50 chip size?TOP
The numbers starting in the letter "G" come from a standard European chip size scale. LEI Products has taken the European standard & modified it to accomidate their new biomass buring technology. These numbers start with the letter "B". Below are some quick references (PDF).
|
8 - What does fuel for The Bio-Burner™ Cost?TOP
Cost is dependent on the available fuel’s supply and demand. As The Bio-Burner™ Distribution Program develops the supply should increase as fuel cost decreases. LEI has created a Biomass VS Propane cost calculator to compare your local fuel costs & calculate your personal potentail savings. |
9 - Can I change to a different fuel easily? TOP
Yes, there is no clean-out process for changing fuels. If using similar fuels you may add the new fuel on top of old and let it run. If different types (i.e. wood chips vs. pellets) allow the fuel bin to completely empty, rotate fuel restrictor plate, fill bin and set controls for fuel type. |
10 - How is fuel stored & delivered? TOP
Depending on fuel needs and source, the fuel may be in bags or delivered in bulk. Keep fuel dry (25% or less) and store away from the burner unit. |
11 - Do some fuels burn cleaner (emissions) than others? TOP
Yes, the emissions may vary with fuel type (i.e. burning pellets emits fewer particulates than sawdust), but most fuels will burn virtually smoke-free. |
12 - What effect does moisture content (m/c) have on fuel? TOP
- Storage – High m/c can result in freezing / clumping, molding and composting.
- Burning – The desired m/c for most fuels is 25% (for peak efficiency). However this rule is somewhat fuel type dependant.
- m/c over 25% lowers burn efficiency as it requires more heat energy to evaporate excess water.
- m/c under 25% lowers burn efficiency as dryer combustion gasses don't conduct heat to the heat exchanger as well. |
13 - Can you burn mixed fuels? TOP
Yes, you can burn mixed fuels as long as the flow rate is set for the largest size fuel in the mix. |
14 - What size fuel do I need and how do I process it? TOP
BB-100 - up to B10 chip size
BB-500 - up to B50 chip size
LEI Products also manufactures a Fuel Processing/drying System (BB-FPS)
A good example of a 3rd Party wood chipper capable of producing B10 chips is the – Farmi/Valby CH260 Wood Chipper which can be found at www.farmiwoodchippers.com |
15 - What is the Moisture Content range for fuel? TOP
BB-100 – up to 40%, peak efficiency 25%
BB-500 – up to 50%, peak efficiency 25%
*Note: for long term storage of biomass fuel a M/C of 12-20% is recommended to prevent freezing & composting |
16 - Can I make money by selling biomass as fuel? TOP
Yes! LEI Products is developing a network of fuel suppliers for those in need of fuel. If you have an abundance of biomass and would like to sell it as fuel, there is a unique business opportunity available. Please contact us if you would like to know more. |
